Santa Cruz Tech Beat news typically covers the entire county, but it’s always worth noting what’s going on in Monterey.
CSUMB hosted Startup Weekend January 24-26, 2014. Startup Weekend connects local entrepreneurs, developers, designers and startup enthusiasts with mentors and resources. Throughout the 54-hour event, attendees share ideas, form teams, and (possibly) launch startups.
More than 100 participants, including 70 registered competitors, 12 coaches, five judges, volunteers and guests, gathered this past weekend at CSUMB for a Startup Weekend described by participants as “awesome!” Over the course of the event, organized by the Institute for Innovation and Economic Development (BCM), participants pitched 32 business ideas, formed 10 teams and worked over 54 hours from Friday to Sunday.
Three winning teams were selected as the top startups:
- “Whats in” – A mobile APP that checks product ingredients for allergens before purchase,
- “Of course” – Assists college students to plan their learning with “what-if” and recommended courses according to their preference and history,
- “FeedMe” – A college campus food exchange.
