April 10, 2018 — Santa Cruz, CA
Join us on Saturday, April 21 as we march for science!
The Santa Cruz March for Science on Saturday, April 21, 2018 will begin with a peaceful rally at the Santa Cruz City Hall courtyard at 10:00 am and feature some great speakers. The march will step off at 10:30 am, winding through downtown Santa Cruz, along the Riverwalk, over to San Lorenzo Park and ending at the community’s Earth Day festival – a lively array of exhibits, activities, entertainment and action opportunities focused on environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The March for Science is an important event to celebrate science in Santa Cruz and beyond. The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good, and for political leaders and policymakers to enact evidence-based policies in the public interest.
Last year’s March for Science was the largest pro-science march in history with more than 1 million people in more than 600 locations across all seven continents joining together in support of science. This historic event was created by scientists and science supporters, powered by volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and generations. This year’s march will build on the successes from last year and show our continuing resolve to stand up for science.
Why are we marching for science?
Scientists are often reassigned when they speak up to make their voices heard. We’re marching to give them a voice and to keep scientific research and discovery at the forefront of the public’s consciousness, not hidden away.
The scientific community is routinely ignored in the name of politics. We’re marching to demand that legislators and government officials make their decisions based on the best science available, not their political agendas.
Why will you be marching for science?
We’d love to hear from you; share your comments on our Facebook page.
Diversity of Community
We want the March for Science to represent the diversity of our community. This will be reflected in our speakers, which include a UCSC student, a science educator at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and members of the non-profit and business communities. This same diversity is apparent in the march’s organizers. We come from all backgrounds and are united in our mission to promote and protect science.
