Yardarm Tech in top 10 most innovative small companies in North America for 2013

A local company, Yardarm Technologies, was recently selected by CNBC as being one of the top 10 most innovative small companies in North America for 2013.

The Capitola-based company develops innovative technology for gun owners and solutions for law enforcement agencies, security firms, and military organizations.

With Yardarm technologies and services, command centers and dispatch units can remotely observe events in the field in real-time, such as when an officer un-holsters their gun or fires their weapon. The technology can even detect the direction of fire.

“This technology has the ability to transform elements of law enforcement investigations and operations,” Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak said, “Innovations like this help us stay one step ahead.”

“Yardarm has developed a technology that can both track stolen or lost firearms and also prevent firearms from being fired if they are moved or stolen. In other words, if a kid picked up the gun when you weren’t home you would have a way to disable it before they hurt themselves or others – and also, if a gun was stolen from your home you could help law enforcement locate it or even prevent it from being fired by the thief,” said Zach Friend, Second District Supervisor, Santa Cruz County. Friend recently joined Yardarm’s Board of Advisors because of his work as a Crime Analyst with the Santa Cruz Police Department.

Federal law enforcement agencies are also interested in what Yardarm has to offer.

“This is a game-changing technology for the military as well as the security and intelligence community,” said Sean Smith, former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security.  “Our military commanders and our federal agencies can benefit tremendously from the real-time intelligence that Yardarm provides.”

For the consumer, Yardarm lets the private gun owner stay connected with their gun. When the owner is away from their home, at work, on vacation – a mobile alert notifies them when the gun at home is being moved without their authorization.  The owner can track the location of the gun that’s moving in real time and decide for themselves how to respond – calling home, notifying authorities, and even remotely disabling the trigger.

“With Yardarm, gun control concerns are curbed, gun safety is improved, and lives are saved,” said Bob Stewart, co-founder and CEO of Yardarm.

Yardarm has been receiving angel funding almost solely from local Santa Cruz County area private individuals.  The company has a fully functional prototype for demo with partners and potential customers.  Their technology is internationally filed and patent pending.  Yardarm intends to stay and to grow in Santa Cruz County.
